The Company

Mitsui & Co., Ltd. (“Mitsui Tokyo”) is the leading Japanese trading and investment firm having business across the world including Australia (Mitsui & Co. (Australia) Ltd., “Mitsui Australia”). Mitsui Tokyo has an investment in a global Renewable Energy (RE) developer, Mainstream Renewable Power, which is headquartered in Dublin, Ireland. Mitsui Australia wishes to hire a Commercial Manager who will work to commercially develop renewable energy projects in Australia, acting as a window between Mitsui Tokyo, Mitsui Australia and Mitsui’s investment company.

In Australia, Mainstream has been actively developing wind projects. The company is currently developing approximately 2GW (gross) of wind farms and wishes to strengthen its project portfolio further.

Job Description

The Role

This is a 2 year fixed-term contract role.

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Commercial Manager who will be responsible for the development of a strategy to deliver the project to Financial Close (FC), including but not limited to accessing different market segments (private bilateral, institutional, governmental, interstate clients) based on a route to market strategy on the future projects of Mitsui’s investment company. The Commercial Manager will manage the project development process and will liaise with Mitsui’s invested company’s commercial function across the company.

The successful candidate will be involved in wind and solar projects, battery storage including co-location opportunities.


Key Responsibilities will include:

  • Prepare, lead and manage commercial activities related to Australian power contracting, early-stage project development and financial close processes.
  • Prepare and lead engagement with bilateral off-takers, participating in respective RFI/RFQ/RFPs and identifying unsolicited commercial opportunities.
  • Structure and negotiate commercial, with a focus on debt and equity arrangements and related contractual agreements.
  • Ensure financial models are aligned with negotiated terms, identifying potential efficiencies and risk areas on acquisitions, investments, disposals, and associated funding activities.
  • Accurate management of information flows critical to maintaining financial models.
  • Present project opportunities, regulatory requirements, and bilateral opportunities to relevant stakeholders.
  • Prepare compliant bid responses, ensuring alignment with regulatory and internal approval processes prior to submission. Drive the combination of technologies (hybrids) which includes storage technology.
  • Collaborate with internal teams to evaluate, draft, and review papers for Risk & Investment Committee and Board approvals, covering deal structuring and valuation

Desired Skills and Experience

The Person

  • Proven experience in bilateral Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) negotiations within the Australian market is essential.
  • Strong capability in commercial negotiations and contributing to financial model assumptions, with the ability to identify potential efficiencies and risk areas related to acquisitions, investments, disposals, and funding activities.
  • Demonstrated expertise in financial analysis with the ability to clearly communicate findings to stakeholders.
  • In-depth knowledge and experience in the Australian energy and renewable energy sectors are highly advantageous.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel Skills and abilities to use the Microsoft Office suite of applications.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret and present both qualitative and quantitative data to support strategic decision-making.
  • Strong communication, negotiation, relationship management and presentation skills.
  • Willingness to work as part of multi-functional teams.
  • Willingness to travel both within Australia and internationally as required.
  • Excellent written and spoken English language skills essential.
