Family Support Worker

The Family Support Workers of the Community Parent and School Support Program (COMPASS) provide regular in-home parenting education and support to families with children up to age 12 (Grade 6) who have been identified with behavioral, emotional, or social challenges. Using strength-based goal setting and positive parenting strategies, we work directly with parents and caregivers to teach the skills needed to assist their child to be successful at home, in school and in the community. The Family Support Worker (FSW) position will maintain a caseload and conduct weekly home visits to support families in recognizing, identifying, and acknowledging their strengths while promoting client involvement in defining realistic goals and concrete tasks.

This position works 18.75 hours per week, with a schedule of Tuesday from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, Wednesday from 1:00 pm to 7:30 pm, and Thursday from 12:45 pm to 7:30 pm, while also offering flexibility to meet client needs and requiring work on two evenings per week

WHAT YOU'LL DO:

  • Carry a caseload of 8 families, with the expectation of 8 visits per week (includes at least 1 evening per week).
  • Provide parenting education, support, and strategies through strength-based goal setting with families.
  • Provide positive parenting, behavioral, self-regulation, and social and problem-solving strategies specific to the needs of the child/family.
  • Plan and prepare for each visit based on client needs using current research and program materials.
  • Maintain a respectful environment and work in partnership with caregivers to determine the best path forward for the family. Support families through the process of implementing strategies and skills. Be understanding and respectful; treat caregivers, children and all involved with honesty and integrity.
  • Attend case consultations, meetings, and/or appointments as deemed necessary and beneficial to the clients/families.
  • Connect and liaise with referral sources and/or other professionals involved with clients/families.
  • Conduct school/daycare observations as necessary with parent’s permission.
  • Refer and connect families with community resources as is beneficial to the clients/families.
  • Complete initial assessments, service plans, case notes, progress reports, and discharge reports within the required timeline for each client file, as per program requirements.
  • Maintain active membership with designated professional regulatory body, adhering to the code of ethics and standards of practice, e.g., social work code of ethics and standards of practice.
  • Foster and contribute to a culture of inclusion and equity in a diverse work environment; understand and recognize that individual differences significantly contribute to YW Calgary’s success in its programs and workplace.
  • Integrate diversity, equity, and inclusion principles into one’s role, work, and engagement with others, as aligned with YW Calgary’s values and Practice Framework.
  • Share individual accountability to create and maintain inclusive and safe spaces and practices (physically and psychologically) that are open, transparent, and encourage accountability, advocacy, and mentorship.
  • Understand and remain current with YW Calgary Health, Safety and Wellness policies, practices and protocols and ensure work is performed in alignment with YW’s culture.
  • Report any hazards or incidents immediately to your leader in accordance with YW Calgary’s incident reporting requirements to help ensure pro-active risk mitigation and management in compliance with legislative requirements (Occupational Health & Safety, Workers’ Compensation Board, etc.)
  • Share individual accountability to create and maintain an inclusive environment that fosters a physical and psychologically safe workplace. Actively participate in the implementation of the National Standard for Psychological Health & Safety and integrate into all work practices and interactions with colleagues.

WHAT YOU'LL BRING:

  • A clear Police Information Check, including a Vulnerable Sector Search, and an Intervention Record Check is required upon commencement of employment.
  • Diploma or degree in Social Work or related human service field
  • Active Registration in good standing with designated professional regulatory body
  • Minimum of 2 years of in-home/outreach experience
  • Strong organizational, time management skills, works well independently.
  • Client centered, strengths-based, trauma informed approach.
  • Valid driver’s license, reliable vehicle with appropriate insurance.
  • Valid First Aid Certificate.
