Job Description





The Divisions within Transportation Maintenance are responsible for sidewalk maintenance, curb and gutter maintenance, asphalt maintenance, storm sewer maintenance, right of way mowing, downtown cleaning, resurfacing and pavement preservation, bridge maintenance and private development/utility inspections. The 218 person staff maintains over 1,130 miles of streets and sidewalks, over 33,000 curb ramps, 3.2 million linear feet of stormwater pipes and over 32,000 drainage inlets.

The Maintenance Technician provides repair, waste removal, maintenance and equipment operation for assigned City of Raleigh maintenance, waste disposal or operational functions. Work includes concrete repairs, operating dump trucks, using leaf machine and snow removal equipment, and working during inclement weather or emergencies as needed.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Operating dump truck to haul crews, supplies and equipment to job sites
  • Assisting with concrete repairs including setup and finishing
  • Operating dump truck with leaf machine attachment during leaf collection season
  • Using snow removal equipment to operate the dump truck during inclement weather
  • This role is required to work extended hours on rotating shifts during emergencies and inclement weather

Typical Qualifications

Education and Experience:
High School Diploma or GED and two years of experience operating various types of heavy equipment including dump trucks, backhoes, excavators and front-end loaders and at least 6 months of experience in concrete repair and finishing

OR

An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation.

Licensing and Certifications:

  • Valid North Carolina Class C Driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire
  • Valid North Carolina Class B Commercial Driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 90 days of hire

ADA and Other Requirements:
Positions in this class typically require: stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.

Heavy Work:
Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Working Conditions:
Work is performed in both the field and in an indoor office environment with moderate exposure to atmospheric conditions (such as fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, etc.); moderate exposure to environmental conditions (such as disruptive people, imminent danger, or a threatening environment); and frequent exposure to intense noise.
