DEFINITION
The Resident Internship Program has been developed to provide Oakland Housing Authority program participants with part time work experience for up to 9 months within the Family and Community Partnerships (FCP) Department. This on-the-job training will give participants a thorough understanding of community program development practices and general office functions in preparation for entry into the competitive workforce. Resident Interns will support the following program areas listed under essential functions: Civic Engagement, Site Services Family Self Sufficiency (FSS), Resident Opportunity Services (ROSS), Leadership; Homeownership; or General Support.
Internship Objectives
- Gain an overall understanding of OHA resident supportive services needs and become familiar with community resources; and
- Develop competencies in program development and implementation; and
- Develop skills successfully using database software and track program benchmarks; and
- Learn and implement marketing and networking strategies.
Personal Development
- Develop planning, organizational and time management skills; and
- Increase knowledge of computer skills and technology; and
- Develop team-based work competencies and professional ethics; and
- Learn effective referral procedures.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Under FCP staff supervision Resident Interns will assist in implementing programs related to employment, education, and leadership development. Assignments are characterized by the following essential functions:
Civic Engagement and Leadership Program Support
- Provides support to civic engagement and leadership development programs for OHA residents and the surrounding community; and
- Assists in developing, facilitating, and implementing outreach and recruitment efforts, workshops, and special events; and
- Provide front desk assistance; and
- Assists with keeping meeting minutes and notes; and
- Assists with maintaining and updating leadership materials and tracking sheets for all leadership programs; and
- Maintains logs of participant communication and internship activities; and
- Assists in mediating conflicts between OHA participants and discusses all incidents and areas of concern with FCP staff.
General Support
- Outreaches program information and greets program participants in a friendly and welcoming manner; and
- Participates in public speaking activities; and
- Facilitates site meetings and conducts outreach activities; and
- Assists in planning and implementing programs and events; and
- Sets up and breaks down spaces for events; and
- Organizes files and performs data entry; and
- Seeks out and maintains relationships with community agencies; and
- Provides support to residents accessing the computer lab; and
- Manages email distribution list.
MARGINAL FUNCTIONS
Work evenings, weekends and perform other work-related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION
- High School Diploma/GED or must be able to provide verification of enrollment in GED classes upon commencement of internship.
- Must be a legal resident/participant of an Oakland Housing Authority housing program; on the lease/voucher and in good standing.
- Some applicable work experience and/or training preferred.
- College units are a plus.
- Job placement will be contingent upon the applicant passing the drug testing.
- Strong desire for a career in community supportive services or education.
Bilingual skills in Mandarin, Cantonese, Vietnamese and/or Spanish are a plus.
Equivalent combination of education, training and experience will be considered.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITY
KNOWLEDGE OF: Modern office practices, basic computer functions including: the Microsoft Office Suite including Excel spreadsheets, internet navigation, electronic correspondence, photocopier and scanning office equipment, and landline and mobile telephone systems.
ABILITY TO: Be self-motivated; deliver excellent customer service to program participants and customers, maintain confidentiality, exercise patience, professionalism and sensitivity with a diverse population; and communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

The names of the highest-ranking candidates will be placed on the List of Qualifiers, and the final selection will be made from this List. College degrees or units required for the position will be verified prior to final appointment. If this information cannot be verified for a candidate, the candidate's name will not be placed on the List of Qualifiers. All appointments are subject to the approval of the Executive Director.
All prospective employees must pass a physical examination and drug screening by an Authority-designated physician. A pre- employment criminal history background check will also be conducted for all positions. For positions requiring use of an Authority vehicle, candidates' driving records will be checked prior to appointment. To be eligible for appointment, each candidate must possess a valid California Class C driver's license and a driving record acceptable to the Authority's insurer. All prospective employees must also provide proof of American citizenship, or legal resident status and the legal right to work in the United States.
Prior to becoming permanent, new employees must successfully pass a probationary period.
