Application/Examination

  • Cover Letter (no more than 2 pages long) that includes the following:
    • Descriptions of innovative and creative talent acquisition strategies you have utilized in your current or previous work; and
    • Discussion of a trend or emerging issue related to recruitment and retention that you think should be a priority for the County, and why.


This is an Open and Promotional recruitment. Anyone may apply. Current County of San Mateo and County of San Mateo Superior Court of California employees with at least six months (1040 hours) of continuous service in classified regular, probationary, extra-help or limited term positions prior to the final filing date will receive five points added to their final passing score on this examination.


The examination process will consist of an Application Screening (weight: pass/fail) and an Interview (weight: 100%), which may include the evaluation of a writing and/or presentation exercise. A screening committee will select those applicants whose education and/or experience appear to best meet the needs of the position. For that reason, not all applicants who meet the qualifications are guaranteed advancement through the interview. Depending on the number of applicants a Phone Interview/Screening may be scheduled in addition to the Application Screening and prior to the interviews.


Tentative Recruitment Timeline
Final Filing Date: February 20, 2025, 5:00 PM PST
Application Screening: February 25, 2025
Phone Interview Screening (if needed): March 3, 2025
Civil Service Interviews (in-person): March 11 and/or 12, 2025
Finalist Interviews: Week of March 17, 2025
