Symetra has an exciting opportunity to join our growing team as an Insurance Capital Standard (ICS) reporting Lead Actuary II !
About the role
The Enterprise Risk Management team is looking for an actuary to join the team! We are seeking an experienced Actuary to lead our Insurance Capital Standard (ICS) reporting function. As the ICS reporting lead, you will be responsible for overseeing the ongoing reporting, analysis, and process enhancements related to a group-wide capital regulatory requirement. You will play a key role in ensuring results are accurate and delivered in a timely manner and coordinating with other departments across the Company to accomplish reporting objectives. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of capital frameworks, preferably including ICS requirements, strong quantitative skills, and the ability to effectively communicate complex results to stakeholders at all levels, including our Japanese parent company, Sumitomo Life.
What you will do
- Lead, oversee, and execute ICS reporting and analysis and act as a subject matter expert regarding ICS.
- Interpret and translate regulatory requirements into actionable plans while ensuring compliance with the ICS technical specifications.
- Own, review, and analyze model outputs and spreadsheet calculations to ensure accuracy, completeness, and consistency.
- Present and explain results and findings to senior management, Sumitomo Life, regulatory authorities, and other key stakeholders as needed.
- Understand how Symetra’s business would be impacted by various types of scenarios and ensure that ICS modeling processes are capturing all material risks.
- Mature and improve processes for calculating and reporting on capital requirements under the ICS framework. Identify opportunities for process improvements, automation, or enhancements to streamline calculation review and validation procedures.
- Supervise and manage process improvements related to models and spreadsheet calculations performed by junior staff, and review this work to provide practical support and constructive feedback, ensuring accuracy and reliability.
- Mentor and provide guidance and support to junior members on the team.
- Communicate across departments to coordinate the delivery of key deliverables and projects.
- Collaborate with external consultants and other associates to stay informed of ICS developments, regulatory changes, and emerging industry practices.
- Collaborate with external auditors to ensure calculation methods and practices comply with regulatory requirements and identify corrective measures as needed. Uphold professional ethics and integrity in actuarial work, ensuring adherence to internal organizational policies, external regulations, and professional standards.

Compensation
Salary Range: $128,700 – $214,600 plus eligibility for annual bonus programs
Who you are
- 6+ years of insurance related actuarial experience.
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent with strong quantitative background including college level mathematics.
- Finished with actuarial exams (FSA), or career ASAs with 15+ yrs. experience and strong performance.
- Deep understanding of Insurance Capital Standard requirements and calculations.
- MG-ALFA experience.
- Past experience managing or guiding junior actuaries.
- Proficiency in SQL or Python is preferred.
- Microsoft Office 365.
- Strong communication skills, particularly as it relates to communication of technical concepts to non-technical audiences. Proven ability to communicate with senior leadership.
- Highly skilled in the use of spreadsheets and actuarial modeling software.
- Advanced knowledge of actuarial concepts and assumptions used for modeling, risk management, pricing, and/or financial reporting.
- Experienced with automation and process improvement.
- Ability to solve complex actuarial problems independently in a multi-dimensional context.
- Ability to work in a team environment, while adapting and supporting change.
- Significant knowledge of insurance products and the industry.
- Deep understanding of insurance GAAP and Statutory accounting concepts and of company financials (income statements, balance sheets, investment portfolio, and policyholder reserves).
- Experienced in a variety of company, industry, and regulatory actuarial issues.
- Commitment to professional development.
- High school diploma required.
