Ahc Medical Assistant (After Hours Clinic)

SUMMARY OF POSITION:

The After Hours Clinic Medical Assistant is an unlicensed health professional and is primarily responsible for assisting patients throughout the routine visit and helping with health management during the after hours clinic. The AHC Medical Assistant works collaboratively with other health care members to provide comprehensive, quality and accessible health care services to patients under the supervision of a provider, clinic operations manager, clinic nurse manager, RN Team Leader, or LVN Team leader., based on location. The AHC MA will also assist with Front Desk, Member Services, and Lab.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Greets and check- in patients including handing out questionnaire/files, scanning insurance card, and collecting co-payments.
  • Schedules appointments for patients.
  • Answer phone calls and respond to request appropriately.
  • Conduct periodic updates of demographic and financial data.
  • Verifies/ updates patients insurance and performs billing procedures including cashier, running receipts, discrepancies and charge summaries into the computer system.
  • Conduct interviews to identify and determine patient eligibility for NEMS sliding fee program, register clients for NEMS service, obtain demographic information, assist in completion of applications and forms, and verify insurance eligibility.
  • Assist members in selecting or changing PCP according to established guidelines.
  • Receive member complaints, assist with documenting the complaint and forwarding the complaint to MS to review.
  • Support the transfer of any patient paper medical records to a non-NEMS provider per patient requests/authorization
  • Works closely with medical providers to provide comprehensive health care to patients.
  • Prepares for the patient visit in advance to ensure that all labs, diagnostics, hospital/ER discharge summary etc. are ready and available for the visit.
  • Assists in the provision of clinical services such as, but not limited to, taking vital signs; performing EKG, immunizations, skin tests, vision and hearing tests, and blood draws; and collects and prepares specimens as necessary.
  • Assists with clinical data measure and entry into the electronic health record including the patients height, weight, vital signs , etc.
  • Assists medical providers in updating health maintenance checklist and patients health record in EPIC and confirms purpose of visit.
  • Operates various medical equipment, e.g., electrocardiogram, audiometry, bilimeter, glucometer, spirometer, HbA1c meter, protime reader, pulse oximeter, spirometry, lab equipment, and autoclave.
  • Injects, handles, or provides vaccines and medications to patients after verifying with medical provider.
  • Measures and describes TB skin test reaction and refers to medical provider if any reactions exceeding thresholds.
  • Prepares exam rooms before and after each patient in accordance with NEMS policy and OSHA guidelines, including restocking of exam rooms, operatory, and sterilizes instruments.
  • Responsible for closing off the exam room and setting the HEPA filter on (if applicable), tossing away immediate trash, changing the exam paper, wiping the exam table and counter in any suspected/confirmed airborne infectious TB patients
  • Assists providers during physical examinations, treatments, and procedures as requested.
  • Assists in discharging the patient at the completion of the office visit including going over the printed office visit summary; aids in the completion of medication, laboratory, and radiology orders; provides patient education information ordered by the provider; answers any final logistical questions the patient may have.
  • Arranges for hospital admission, ER visit, or transportation services as required.
  • Prepares lab sample with proper lab tubes, process through the centrifuge, store and prepare demographics for pick up
  • Per the provider, will coordinate referrals to other departments within the agency as well as to outside agencies.
  • Refers to a medical provider for any telephone or drop-in triaging cases.
  • Reviews completeness of providers discharge notes. Assists in checks of completion of Providers work.
  • Assists the patient in arranging for translation service.
  • Prepares forms required for different programs, e.g. authorization, and referral forms.
  • Prepares common prescribed medication for Provider to dispense
  • Responsible to track and follow up on patients with continuing health care needs such as, but not limited to, health screening, breast, cervical, prostate, glucose, cholesterol, etc.
  • Prepares/obtain lab orders, post lab charges, release lab orders, informs, generates and posts bills and collects payments.
  • Explains how to collect random or timed urine, sputum, feces or semen sample.
  • Assists with achieving organizational goals.
  • Performs other job duties as required by manager/supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Completion of a high school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Medical Assistant certificate from an accredited school required.
  • Current documentation of Basic Life Support is required.
  • Documentation and completion of 160 hours of externship and a minimum of 2 years experience as a Medical Assistant working in a clinic setting.
  • Must be proficient in computer usage Microsoft Office and EMR (EPIC is a plus)
  • Current Certified Phlebotomy Technician 1(CPT-1) certificate issued by the State of California preferred.

LANGUAGE:

  • Must be able to fluently speak, read and write English.
  • Fluency in Spanish required.
  • Fluency in other languages are an asset.

STATUS:

  • This is an FLSA non-exempt position.
  • This is an OSHA high-risk position.
  • This is a Full Time position.
