Essential Functions

  • Lead the Team: Recruit, hire, train, and manage a high-performing team of staff and volunteers, ensuring clear expectations, regular feedback, and a collaborative environment.
  • Enhance Member Experience: Evaluate swim programs, monitor progress, and maintain high quality standards for sessional lessons to improve member retention and satisfaction.
  • Ensure Safety: Conduct on-going audits, health & safety checks, and daily walkarounds to correct unsafe or high-risk areas and maintain a safe and welcoming aquatic environment; Ongoing evaluation of aquatic supervision and lifeguarding ensuring YMCA scanning, guarding and patrol standards are consistently met
  • Support Excellence: Work closely with the Aquatics Center Manager to deliver high-quality programs such as the Junior Lifeguard Club, Swim Club, and ASP, ensuring they meet organizational goals.
  • Be Prepared: Uphold all YMCA emergency procedures, Alberta health code, pool standards, and best practices, responding to incidents with precision and professionalism.
  • Foster Connections: Build positive relationships with members, participants, families, colleagues and volunteers to encourage parent/caregiver involvement and strengthen the sense of community and belonging.
  • Service Excellence: Ensure Service that Shines and other related aquatics standards are consistently met and respond to service issues with possible solutions in a timely manner


What You'll Need for This Job

  • Experience: Minimum 2 years in an aquatics leadership role.
  • Education: A degree in Recreation, Physical Education, Education, or related field is an asset.
  • Certifications:
    • Required: Intermediate First Aid & CPR-C, National Lifeguard (NL) Pool, and either YMCA Swim Instructor (YSI) or Lifesaving Instructor (LSI).
    • Preferred: Aquatics Emergency Care (AEC), National Coaching Certification (NCCP), Aquatic Supervisor Training (AST), National Lifeguard Instructor (NLI), or First Aid Instructor (FAI).
    • Additional Requirements: Lifesaving Swim Instructor (LSI) and YMCA Champion - Aquatics within 1 year of hire; Oxygen Administration (O2) within 6 months. Ability to maintain certification-level currency without expiry as well as physical and mental readiness
  • Skills: Strong leadership, problem-solving, and interpersonal abilities.
  • Integrity: Must pass a Police Information Check with a Vulnerable Sector Search and complete WHMIS and child abuse prevention training within 30 days of hire
