Assistant Controller

Sun Orchard is the undisputed market leader in not-from-concentrate citrus ingredients and refreshments. We are looking for an Assistant Controller to join our team in the Florida office! The Assistant Controller will support the Corporate Controller in overseeing accounting operations, ensuring accuracy and compliance in financial reporting, and driving continuous improvement across accounting processes. This role will be a key business partner to finance leadership, assisting in the management of day-to-day accounting functions and contributing to the financial health and growth of Sun Orchard. The Assistant Controller will also play a critical role in developing controls, improving reporting capabilities, and reducing the workload of senior leadership through effective delegation and process management.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes to ensure timely and accurate financial reporting.

  • Prepare journal entries, account reconciliations, and financial analysis to support reporting needs.

  • Support preparation of financial statements and internal management reports.

  • Maintain and enhance internal controls, ensuring compliance with GAAP and company policies.

  • Assist with annual audits, including coordination with external auditors and preparation of audit schedules.

  • Monitor general ledger activity, investigate discrepancies, and analyze financial variances.

  • Provide guidance to staff accountant and senior accountant; support AP/AR Manager with escalations and training needs.

  • Collaborate with operational teams to ensure accurate cost accounting and inventory reporting.

  • Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis, including support for cash flow forecasting.

  • Oversee CAPEX tracking and approval processes, ensuring compliance with Delegation of Authority and supporting ROI analysis for capital projects.

  • Manage compliance and regulatory filings including but not limited to state and local tax filings (e.g., New Mexico GRT, Washington Excise Tax) and 401(k) audit support.

  • Take ownership of monitoring and triaging the shared accounting inboxes, while assigning tasks to the appropriate team members.

  • Partner with the Controller to review and manage customer credit limits and terms, supporting credit risk assessments.

  • Lead documentation of accounting processes and develop Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), including Zoho Expense, CAPEX requests, vendor/customer onboarding workflows, etc.

  • Serve as a liaison with IT on AFS/WMS system issues, reporting enhancements, and automation initiatives to improve data accuracy and streamline processes.

  • Identify and implement process improvements and automation opportunities within the accounting function.

  • Support special projects and ad hoc reporting requests from the Controller and senior leadership.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.

  • 3–5 years of progressive accounting experience, preferably in manufacturing, food & beverage, or consumer goods industries.

  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, internal controls, and financial reporting best practices.

  • Experience working in a private equity-owned environment preferred.

  • Familiarity with ASC 842 lease accounting and fixed asset accounting.

  • Proficient in ERP/accounting systems (experience with AFS, WMS, Visual Lease, Paychex, or similar systems a plus).

  • Advanced Excel skills and the ability to work with large datasets.

  • Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and ability to meet tight deadlines.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with a collaborative, team-oriented approach.

  • Bilingual in English/Spanish preferred but not required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience assisting with credit management and customer credit evaluations.

  • Experience developing and managing SOPs across accounting and finance functions.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to work extended hours during peak financial reporting periods.

  • Ability to travel domestically as needed (up to 10% travel), including visits to the Tempe, AZ facility.

Working Conditions

  • Full-time, on-site at the Doral, Miami office.

  • Fast-paced office environment requiring multi-tasking and collaboration with cross-functional teams.
