Expression of Interest: Members of the Basin Community Committee (BCC) First Nations member

The Murray–Darling Basin Authority (MDBA) is seeking expressions of interest from First Nations individuals interested in being appointed as a member of the Basin Community Committee (the Committee).

We are looking for one First Nations individual to join the Committee.

As part of their role, Committee members are paid for their time and supported to travel to meetings and events throughout the Basin.

About the role:
The Committee provides advice to the MDBA and the Murray–Darling Basin Ministerial Council, on a wide range of issues relating to water management in Australia’s biggest river system. Committee members bring their important local knowledge of community and water management to this important forum.

The MDBA, in partnership with Murray–Darling Basin (Basin) governments, manages the Basin’s water resources in the national interest. With the purpose of rivers for generations, the MDBA’s top priority is the wellbeing and resilience of the Basin’s river system, its people, and places.

Committee members provide a Basin wide holistic perspective to the Authority on the performance of its functions and engages with the community on matters relating to Basin water resources. Currently, preparing for the 2026 Basin Plan Review is a particular focus.

The successful applicant may be appointed for a 3-year period later this year. Committee members receive remuneration and allowances.

Eligibility:

  • This position is identified as a special measure under section 8(1) of the Racial Discrimination Act 1975. It is only open to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander applicants to promote substantive equality and representation in decision-making forums impacting Indigenous communities.
  • Membership of the Committee is specified by the Water Act 2007 (Cth) and must include at least two First Nations individuals with expertise in First Nations matters relevant to the Basin’s water resources.
