Bioinformatics Intern
The Position

Responsibilities:

  • Literature review in the area of Domain Adaptation.

  • Implements or modifies existing algorithms to analyze NGS data.

  • Implements software in prototyping and commercial product development environments.

  • Collaborates with other members of a project team to meet defined scientific and technical goals/requirements.

  • Identifies and documents Intellectual Property opportunities for technology and applications. Presents results to project partners, collaboration partners within the Roche group, customers, and at scientific conferences.

  • Other duties may be assigned by management in the pursuit of the operational goals of the group.

Who You Are

  • Education: MSc students OR PhD students (highly preferred).

  • Preferred majors: Computer Science, Statistics, Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Electrical/Biomedical Engineering or any related STEM field.

  • Actively conducting research in the following areas: machine learning and deep learning.

  • Must have at least two years of experience in conducting research, writing peer-reviewed publications, and software development.

  • Strong algorithmic problem solving and software development skills.

  • Strong coding skills in Python, Pytorch, or Tensorflow.

  • Must have a 3.0 GPA.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with domain adaptation & generalization techniques (not required, but highly desirable).

  • Experience with Machine learning / Deep learning (used in NGS context) is a plus.

  • Experience with generative models is a plus.

  • Hands-on experience using a workflow management system such as Nextflow or Snakemake, using Docker and cloud computation resources and storage.

  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to think unconventionally to derive creative and innovative solutions.

  • Ability to collaborate effectively with your mentor and others in Roche on research projects.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, cross-group, and cross-culture collaboration skills.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with ability to adjust to technical and non-technical audiences.

  • Result-oriented individual that thrives in collaborative multi-disciplinary teams. Excels at incorporating feedback in a professional manner.

  • Proven track record of achieving significant results as demonstrated by first-authored publications in high-impact journals or at top ML conferences (ICML, NeurIPS, ICLR, AISTATS, CVPR, ICCV, etc.).

  • Participation in student organizations and/or other leadership experience preferred.
