Summary
The Charlotte Water Communications Team is currently accepting applications for a Communications Team intern. This position is expected to assist with public events, social media strategy, internal department communication, marketing, and press events. We are seeking an intern interested in learning all aspects of the communications, marking and public relations tasks of our business.This internship would be a minimum of 20 hours per week with a maximum of 40 hours for up to 12 weeks.
We are seeking an individual who is flexible, organized, professional and eager to learn. The intern will be expected to work a hybrid working schedule where part of their weekly hours is spent working from home and other hours will be spent in the office on Brookshire Boulevard as arranged by the Public Affairs Manager. Interns may also be tasked with project tasks requiring visits to various Charlotte Water and community locations. Interns will be equipped with a laptop and iPhone.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide support to social media efforts based on analytics and needs of the department
- Assist with set up, execution and breakdown of events
- Assist with the creation of signage, circulars, mockups, email, or other promotions
- Attend meetings and take meeting minutes
- Obtain and prepare analysis of data
- Assist with preparation of presentations for internal and external use
- Help coordinate press conferences and create press kits
- Assist with special projects and assignments
- Completes research projects
- Creates marketing materials for residential and commercial uses
- Other community engagement duties as assigned
Preferred Qualification
- Preferred enrollment in Communications, Marketing, Public Administration, or similar program.
Minimum Qualifications
- Intern must be an undergraduate or graduate student currently enrolled in a college or university.

Conditions of Employment
The City’s Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte. The type of information that will be collected as part of a background check includes, but is not limited to: reference checks, social security verification, education verification, criminal conviction record check, and, if applicable, a credit history check, sex offender registry and motor vehicle records check.
Background checks must be in compliance with all federal and state statutes, such as the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). The checks must be consistent with the guidelines set forth by these laws requiring organizations to obtain a candidate’s written authorization before obtaining a criminal background report, motor vehicle records check or credit report; and to properly store and dispose of information derived from such reports.
Final candidates must pass a pre-employment drug-screening test and physical examination. During the selection process, candidates may be asked to take a skills test, and/or participate in other assessments.
