The Data Center Operations Specialist will play a pivotal role assisting UCSF’s central IT data center operations, focusing on maintaining the physical infrastructure of data centers. The Data Center Operations Specialist is accountable for ensuring the physical infrastructure is operational, monitoring environmental conditions to ensure optimal conditions for hardware, and coordinating power distribution to data center equipment. The role also involves implementing physical security measures to protect the data center from unauthorized access and ensuring compliance with industry standards and regulatory requirements. The Data Center Operations Specialist plans for data center capacity and monitors performance to ensure that the data center is operating efficiently, as well as proactively implementing disaster recovery measures while also replying quickly to infrastructure incidents.
The Data Center Operations Specialist will coordinate the maintenance of hardware, software, and networking equipment within the data center environment. They will ensure the delivery of reliable services to the University by overseeing the collection and documentation of requirements, assembling network and computer hardware, and handling escalated complex assembly tasks. This role will guide team members to ensure all data center systems are properly configured, optimized, and monitored for maximum uptime and performance. The Data Center Operations Specialist works closely with the Data Center Operations Analyst and Manager, Data Center Services to provide reliable and efficient data center services to UCSF stakeholders.
The Data Center Operations Specialist will positively impact UCSF’s operations and culture by ensuring UCSF’s IT infrastructure is operable, secure, efficient, and effective in service of the University’s mission. The Data Center Operations Specialist will advance the University’s mission by delivering exceptional information technology services comprehensively and consistently across customers and stakeholders. This role will execute UCSF’s vision while modeling UCSF’s culture and values.

Department Description
The Platform Services team within Infrastructure Services is committed to empowering the academic, medical, and research mission of UCSF by ensuring that all customers have seamless, secure, and accessible technological support. The team oversees the management and maintenance of various technology platforms, including systems, databases, and cloud services, to guarantee they are secure, readily available, and performing optimally. Platform Services handles the management of critical software, such as Epic, ensuring it supports the highest level of medical service delivery by operating at peak performance. The team also oversees data center operations, including server management, storage, and networking equipment, to ensure the reliable delivery of health services.
Additionally, it manages enterprise databases, Oracle, SQL, and other defined databases with a focus on data security, availability, and top-tier performance. All these tasks are critical not just for the smooth operation of the University’s technological infrastructure, but also for enhancing productivity, enabling the provision of high-quality health services and learning, and ultimately, improving patient and student outcomes.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent combination of experience/training, in one or more of the following fields: computer science, engineering, computer information systems, etc.
- 3+ years’ Experience in one or more of the following fields: information technology, data center operations, data center facilities, etc.
- Experience in data center management, including hardware, virtualization technologies, and networking equipment. Understanding of IT and data center operations.
- Understanding of servers, storage systems, networking equipment, and their configurations.
- Knowledge of safety policies, practices, and procedures relevant to data center operations. Experience with on-premises hosting and colocation.
- Proficiency in using data center infrastructure management (DCIM) tools. Knowledge of environmental monitoring systems and software.
- Proficiency in managing UPS systems, HVAC systems, and other physical infrastructure associated with temperature control and power systems.
- Knowledge of power distribution systems, including generators and power distribution units. Familiarity with environmental controls, including temperature, humidity, and airflow.
- Knowledge of Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) and other industry best practices for data center management.
- Ability to diagnose and resolve hardware and infrastructure issues. Skills in performing routine maintenance and repairs on data center equipment.
- Ability to monitor and analyze data center performance metrics. Ability to generate clear and concise reports on data center performance and incidents.
- Ability to maintain detailed documentation of data center infrastructure and operations.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills and ability to communicate technical ideas to a diverse community of colleagues and stakeholders. Can relay technical information to audiences of technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Able to establish and advance positive working relationships and a strong rapport with a diverse community of colleagues including team members, stakeholders, and customers.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to balance competing priorities and deliver concurrent projects to various stakeholder types.
- Experience working in a project-based environment using leading project management practices including schedule management, status reporting, and communication of project risks and issues.
- Strong problem-solving skills, ability to uncover root of difficult problems and scope solutions based on knowledge of available resources and timelines as well as awareness of vision and strategy. Seeks information from multiple and diverse sources to inform solutions. Demonstrated ability to make decisions with integrity.
