Drafter / Estimator (Remote)
SF Metalworks
Availability During PST Business Hours Required

Draft with precision. Estimate with confidence. Build excellence from afar.

At SF Metalworks, we create exceptional architectural metalwork-from statement staircases to sculptural pieces and precision-built details. We're looking for a remote Drafter/Estimator who brings clarity, organization, and technical accuracy to every project.

This is a part-time (20-30 hrs/week) remote role with the potential to grow into full-time. You'll turn rough sketches into build-ready drawing sets, produce accurate estimates, coordinate technical details, and help our team bring ambitious ideas to life.

If you love clean drawings, well-organized files, and seeing a concept turn into something tangible and beautiful, you'll thrive here.

What You'll Own

Drafting & Technical Documentation

  • Produce clear, accurate digital drawing sets for client approval.
  • Convert approved designs into shop-ready documentation including 2D/3D models, BOMs, cut lists, hardware specs, and quality requirements.
  • Build and maintain traveler packets following SFM drafting standards.
  • Generate accurate cut files (.DXF, .STEP) for CNC operations and collaborate with internal/external vendors on handoffs.
  • Place material or hardware orders when delegated by the Shop Foreman or Operations Manager.
  • Confirm pricing, lead times, and vendor timelines to keep projects moving smoothly.

Estimating & Proposal Support

  • Review quote requests, interpret scope, and identify key project elements (materials, finishes, geometry, fabrication requirements).
  • Submit RFIs to clients and RFQs to vendors for clarity on cost, feasibility, and lead times.
  • Estimate labor hours or coordinate with the Shop Foreman for hour projections.
  • Draft scope language for client proposals and align with our Client Service Manager.
  • Lead estimating and proposal development for CNC-only jobs using Paperless Parts.

Coordination & Organization

  • Maintain clean, accurate project files and ensure updated models are uploaded weekly.
  • Build and maintain a digital library of frequently used parts and non-standard components.
  • Follow all SFM CAD standards for modeling, file structure, and documentation clarity.
  • Provide proactive weekly updates to your Manager regarding progress and hours.
  • Flag scope changes, missing information, or timeline risks early so the team stays aligned.

What You Bring

Hard Skills

  • 3+ years drafting experience in architectural, mechanical, or fabrication settings (portfolio required).
  • Proficiency in Rhino 6+, Fusion 360 or SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Adobe Creative Suite, and Excel/Google Sheets.
  • Solid understanding of fabrication workflows and mechanical design principles.
  • Ability to model in 3D and extract clean, detailed 2D shop drawings.
  • Experience generating CNC cut files (.DXF, .STEP).
  • Strong estimating skills for materials, labor, and vendor coordination.
  • Organized digital habits and strong communication skills-written and verbal.

Soft Skills

  • Creative problem-solver with a practical, build-minded approach.
  • Comfortable toggling between the macro (project intent) and micro (hardware spec #7).
  • Collaborative and open to feedback; able to work independently and stay aligned.
  • Can manage multiple deadlines in a fast-moving, high-expectation environment.

Work Environment

  • Remote, 20-30 hours per week, with potential for full-time.
  • Availability during Pacific Standard Time business hours required.
  • Work may involve extended periods of computer-based drafting or modeling.
  • Preference for candidates located in California or within driving distance of Colusa, CA, but not required.

You'll need:A reliable computer, webcam, internet connection, and a quiet workspace.

Compensation

  • $30-$45/hour, depending on experience and portfolio strength.

How to Apply

Your drawings tell your story-and we want to see it.A portfolio is required and should highlight your architectural and/or mechanical drafting work, along with examples that show how you think, problem-solve, and build.

If you're excited to contribute to high-end custom fabrication projects, collaborate with a skilled team, and bring clarity and beauty to the design-to-build process, we'd love to hear from you.
