Engineering Manager, Product Engineering

About the job

Nordic Semiconductor is looking for an Engineering Manager to lead a product engineering team in Oslo, working on “nRF Cloud powered by Memfault”.

Our platform gives hardware teams the tools to monitor, debug, and update IoT devices in production. Companies like reMarkable, Ultrahuman, and Airthings rely on it to keep millions of devices reliable in the field, and the results speak for themselves. Customers have reported stats like 10x reductions in return rates, 90% fewer device resets, and doubled engineering productivity. We're an industry leader in enabling hardware teams to ship with confidence and iterate fast after launch.

Cloud-based tooling and generative AI are changing how products get built, debugged, and shipped. Our platform is at the center of that shift for the IoT industry, bringing software industry best practices to firmware engineers and giving product teams real visibility into how their devices perform in the real world. Customers are onboarding new devices daily, usage is scaling fast, and the developer experience we deliver directly impacts how engineers build connected devices.

You'll manage a team of 6-8 engineers building the unified web platform that ties all of this together. That means you're accountable for the team's productivity, the quality of what they ship, and the growth of the people on it. You'll work closely with product management and design to turn business priorities into engineering execution, and you'll have real ownership over how the team operates day to day.

Key responsibilities

  • Own your team's productivity and output. You're accountable for what the team delivers. That means proactively identifying blockers, balancing workload, and shaping workflows so people have the information and focus they need.

  • Build and maintain a healthy team culture. Create a safe, supportive environment where people can do their best work. Set clear expectations, give direct and timely feedback, and foster real collaboration.

  • Partner with product and design. Work as a peer with PMs and designers to shape what your team builds. Translate business priorities into engineering plans and make sure the team understands the "why" behind their work.

  • Hire well. When the team is performing, hiring becomes the highest-leverage thing you can do. You'll own the hiring process for your team, from defining roles to closing candidates.

  • Coach and develop engineers. Run meaningful 1:1s, set quarterly goals, solicit peer feedback, and help each person on your team feel a real sense of progress. Identify growth opportunities and give people the support to reach them.

  • Stay technically engaged. You won't be writing code daily, but you need to understand the architecture, review technical decisions, and be able to jump in when the team needs it. You should be a credible technical voice in the room.

  • Drive execution with the right amount of process. Use project management techniques that actually help rather than slow things down. Define team KPIs, track progress, and escalate early when commitments are at risk.

  • Represent your team across the organization. Communicate up and across clearly. Build relationships with other engineering leads, and make sure your team's work is visible and well understood.

Qualification and skills

  • 6+ years working in product engineering teams, with a strong foundation as a senior-level individual contributor.

  • 2+ years of demonstrated leadership experience. Formal management experience is ideal, but strong technical leadership counts too.

  • Deep experience with modern web product development. You don't need to match our exact stack, but you should have managed teams building complex web applications and understand the tradeoffs involved in frontend, backend, and infrastructure work.

  • Technical credibility. You should be able to read code, understand system architecture, participate in design reviews, and serve as a tiebreaker on technical decisions when needed.

  • Strong written and verbal communication. Most of this job is communicating, whether it's giving feedback in a 1:1, aligning with a PM on scope, or presenting a plan to leadership.

  • Proven ability to work on a distributed team that values autonomy, async-first communication, clear documentation, and intentional culture-building across time zones.

  • Experience hiring engineers. You've been involved in defining roles, running interviews, and closing candidates.

  • A track record of building productive, collaborative teams where engineers grow and deliver.

Nice to have

  • Background in IoT, developer tools, or embedded systems tooling.

  • Experience working in an organization going through a significant product integration or platform migration.

  • Familiarity with React/TypeScript, Python, Kotlin, or similar web technologies at a level where you can engage meaningfully with your team's work.

Personal Skills

  • You lead with care and accountability. You genuinely invest in the people on your team and hold yourself responsible for outcomes.

  • You think about systems, not just tasks. You look upstream to figure out why things aren't working and fix the root cause, not the symptom.

  • You default to clarity. You set expectations, create narrative around the team's work, and make sure people know what good looks like.

  • You're a strong communicator. You can explain technical decisions to non-technical stakeholders and translate business context into something your team can act on.

  • You're curious about the domain. You want to understand how IoT devices work, what firmware engineers actually need, and how cloud tooling and AI can make hardware product teams fundamentally more effective.
