Main Purpose and Function
This position will work under the direction of the Site Supervisor Operator and/or the Superintendent. The successful candidates will be responsible for the safe operation of the equipment in an efficient and effective manner in all areas of the Transfer & Landfill Operations Branch.
As an Equipment Operator IVb, you will be responsible for daily safety inspections; including identifying safety hazards as well as equipment inspections (e.g. pre-trip). You will carry out verbal written instructions, and direct and supervise co-workers in a variety of tasks. You will interact with contractors, residential and commercial customers in a courteous and respectful manner.
As operators may be required to manage asbestos burial and other type of materials, successful candidates are required to be fit tested annually, carry, maintain and wear respirators as operationally required. Jewelry, long hair and facial hair may impede a complete seal of a respirator and will need to be adjusted or removed to ensure a seal can be achieved.
Three positions are available. The regular work schedules and locations for these positions are based on a 10-hour work day, 4-day work week. Successful candidates will be required to work one of the following three shifts: Monday-Thursday 10:00pm-8:30am, Tuesday-Friday 10:00pm-8:30am, or Friday-Monday 10:00pm-8:30am. Successful candidates may also be required to adjust shifts and change locations as operationally required in accordance to the CUPE 1004 Collective Agreement.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
- Operate a two-way radio for job related activities in a brief and concise manner using proper radio procedures.
- Operate equipment such as, but not limited to, a bulldozer, compactor, excavator and to perform general labour work in any area of the Landfill station as required.
- Other duties/responsibilities as assigned.
- Daily regular maintenance such as topping up fluids, cleaning and greasing of machine and overall cleanliness of the machine.
Qualifications
Education and Experience:
- Grade 10 or an equivalent combination of experience and training. If Grade 10 is not completed, Superintendents will assess an equivalent combination of experience and training as measured by night school, city courses, workshops and seminars.
- Minimum of 6 months’ (1040 hours) experience as an Equipment Operator IVB or higher with the Transfer and Landfill Operations Branch in the past 3 years.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Demonstrated knowledge and discipline to follow TLO Policies and Safe Operating Procedures and WorkSafeBC regulations.
- Demonstrated mechanical aptitude to ensure equipment is operating properly, and report mechanical issues.
- Knowledge of operating equipment such as bulldozer, compactor and excavator.
- Ability to act as a lead hand to a group of subordinates engaged in the work.
- Ability to work under general supervision on routine assignments.
- Ability to prioritize and organize work, handle multiple assignments, and meet deadlines.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills including confidently interacting with the public through phone, email and in person.
- Ability to understand and effectively carry out oral and written instructions which may be accompanied by sketches and diagrams.
- Skilled in the use and care of tools and equipment required for the work.
- Demonstrated ability to respond to enquiries and complaints, and deal tactfully with the public, contractors and co-workers.
- Proven ability to exercise sound judgment and discretion.
- Ability to work well in a team environment with little or no supervision under tight deadlines, sometimes in the outdoors in inclement weather.
- Agility, muscular coordination and sufficient strength to permit the performance of heavy manual labour.
Driver’s License and Record Checks:
- A current and valid BC Class 3 Driver’s License with Air Brake Endorsement and a safe driving record are required.
- 3 years accumulation of no more than 1 preventable work related driving or equipment operating accident in any single year
- Employees who do not demonstrate a satisfactory driving record will have their application reviewed in more detail
