The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Habitat is recruiting for a Habitat Biologist 4 located in Douglas!

What you will be doing:
This dynamic position in the ADF&G Habitat Section Region 1 (Douglas) office is responsible for reviewing, issuing, monitoring, and enforcing Title 16 permits for activities in streams supporting resident and anadromous fishes and in legislatively designated Special Areas; participating in the state's Large Mine Project Team; and updating the Catalog of Waters Important for Spawning, Rearing, and Migration of Anadromous Fishes. Duties include training and overseeing field staff; completing field work and preparing trip reports; properly collecting and processing biological and sediment samples; accurately compiling and analyzing data, maintaining data sets; writing, peer-reviewing, and publishing technical reports; collaborating with staff in the department, other agencies, and developers; presenting project proposals, results, and recommendations at public and agency meetings and symposiums; and developing and implementing aquatic resource study plans. This position also supervises one habitat biologist II, serves as the Douglas Island Building laboratory officer, assists the Fish and Game Coordinator with projects and budget management, and facilitates office function.

The Habitat Section mission is to protect the state’s valuable fish and wildlife resources and their habitats as the population and economy expand. Habitat biologists participate in agency reviews of proposed development activities; issue Title 16 permits prescribing measures to protect, fish, wildlife, and their habitats; and monitor approved activities. This position primarily reviews and manages large projects, including industrial activities such as hard rock mines, hydroelectric power, and highway and airport construction, as they relate to ADF&G Title 16 authorities; and implements and oversees work for several aquatic biomonitoring programs collecting aquatic resource data near potential and developed projects. Maintaining positive working relationships is important for achieving resource protection with land and resource use.

The position is located in the ADF&G Region I office on Douglas Island, which is connected by bridge to downtown Juneau, and within walking distance of trails and the Douglas boat ramp. We are surrounded by the Tongass National Forest, the largest contiguous temperate rainforest in the world and living here offers access to abundant outdoor adventures; fieldwork to project sites includes traveling across Southeast Alaska, providing opportunities to work in different parts of the region.

Special Note:
  • Valid Driver's License is required.
  • The successful candidate will be required to safely and effectively complete rigorous field work in rough and uneven terrain, wading rivers and streams, with potential for wildlife encounters. Travel usually includes working long days (up to 15 hours) and seasonally week-long trips.
  • Required training, which may be completed on the job, includes ADF&G’s Firearms and Wildlife Safety training, Mine Safety and Health Administration training for Underground and Surface Mining, Wilderness First Aid, CPR and AED, and Occupational Safety and Health Administration training for working in the Douglas Island Building laboratory. Additional training opportunities may include: introduction to ArcPro, remote worker swiftwater safety, aircraft water ditching for survival, and electrofishing techniques.,

Minimum Qualifications

A bachelor's degree from an accredited college in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, or natural resource management;
AND
One year of advanced professional level biologist experience. The required professional biologist work experience is met by service as a Fishery Biologist 3, Wildlife Biologist 3, Habitat Biologist 3, or Fisheries Geneticist 2 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent with another employer.

Substitution:
A bachelor's degree from an accredited college that includes or is supplemented by the following credit hours will substitute for the degree in a specific field:
  • at least 24 semester hours (36 quarter hours) in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, or natural resource management (excluding courses that focus on agricultural husbandry techniques, human population dynamics, or the design and manipulation of landscapes), of which 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) are upper division courses; and
  • at least 12 semester hours (16 quarter hours) in any combination of two or more of the following: chemistry, physics, mathematics, statistics, geology, hydrology, or GIS.

Special Note:
"Upper division courses" means courses that are specialized, in-depth and advanced. Such courses emphasize problem-solving, analytical thinking skills, and theoretical applications, with depth and rigor in a discipline's theories and methods; specialization in a particular field or profession; refinement of general education; and/or development of specific intellectual and professional skills. Upper division courses are commonly identified in college catalogs as 300 level and higher.

Some positions may require training in specialized areas such as hydroacoustics, microscopic analysis, underwater research, or fish habitat restoration or enhancement.
