Job Description
Job Title: Healthcare Assistant (Wards) Maternity Cover
Location: Kingsbridge Private Hospital Sligo
Reports to: Ward Manager
Accountable to: General Manager
Salary: Dependent on experience
Hours of work: 24 hours per week (Maternity Cover)
Job Summary:
The post holder carries out assigned tasks involving direct care in support of and supervised by clinical staff.
Scope of Responsibilities
The post holder will:
1. Assist the trained members of the nursing team in the delivery of a high standard of nursing care within the Surgical Ward.
2. Assist nursing staff in the Ward carrying out assigned Patient care in accordance with below;
Ward Area
· Assist patients in the bathroom.
· Vital signs, record and report to nurse.
· I&O nutrition and hydration /assess dietary requirements of patients and NPO.
· Clean beds, equipment, make patient beds and trolleys.
· Stock patient rooms and nursing station when supplies are low / check expiration. dates.
· Answer call bells and alert nurses.
· Maintain patient safety at all times.
· Assist nurse with ward checks/ordering stock within the Dept. and check. Expiry dates on sterile stock etc.
· Be familiar with hospital electronic systems.
· Attend staff meetings as required.
· Order theatre scrubs and ward linen as required.
· Assist in transporting patients from Recovery to the Ward when required.
· Maintain hospital infection control standards.
· Adhere to hospital uniform policy.
· Prioritize patient satisfaction.
· Maintain patient’s dignity and personal hygiene.
3. Adhere to all relevant Hospital Policies including the following:
(a) Health and Safety at Work.
(b) Fire Precautions.
(c) Reporting of sick leave/absenteeism.
(d) Hospital Disaster Plan.
(e) Confidentiality.
(f) Infection Control.
4. Adhere to the Hospital’s HR policy.
5. Report any accidents/incidents to Nurse in Charge.
6. Undertake appropriate in-service training including attendance at hospital training Fire Lectures and Moving and Handling Techniques, Chemical Training and Basic Life Support.
General Responsibilities
The post holder will be required to:
1. Co-operate fully with the implementation of the organization’s Health and Safety arrangements, reporting any accidents/incidents/equipment defects to line manager, and maintain a clean and safe environment for patients/clients, members of the public and staff.
2. Adhere at all times to all Kingsbridge Hospital’s/codes of conduct, standards of attendance, appearance and behavior.
3. Comply fully with the policy and procedures regarding records management, as well as the Data Protection Act, accepting legal responsibility for all manual or electronic records held, created or used as part of his/her duties, and ensuring that confidentiality is maintained at all times.
4. Take responsibility for his/her own ongoing learning and development, including full participation in Development Reviews/Appraisals, in order to maximize his/her potential and continue to meet the demands of the post.
5. Be committed to providing the highest possible standard of service to patients/clients and to members of the public, by treating all those with whom he/she comes into contact in the course of work, in a pleasant, courteous and respectful manner.
6. All employees are responsible for records held, created or used as part of their role. Employees are required to be conversant with the organizations policy and procedures on records management and seek advice if in doubt.
7. Other duties of a similar nature and appropriate to the grade may be assigned from time to time.
8. Works under the direction of a qualified member of staff.
Essential Criteria
1. No statutory nursing qualifications are required for this post.
2. The post holder must have Fetac level 5 and the following.
3. The ability to learn duties quickly and easily and carry them out either under minimal supervision or direct supervision, as appropriate.
4. Good IT skills.
5. The ability to act on initiative, anticipating duties and planning ahead.
6. Have good interpersonal skills and the ability to relate easily to people of all ages.
7. Ability to work well as a team member, to assist qualified nursing staff in providing a high standard of patient care.
8. To remain alert and observant while on duty noticing and reporting anything unusual with respect to the patient or the working environment.
9. To work efficiently in a busy environment.
10. To be aware of the need for confidentiality in a hospital environment.
11. To complete simple documentation.
12. Carry out a full range of duties including lifting and handling.
13. The post holder must be flexible with regard to duties and leave.
Desirable Criteria
1. Previous experience of caring for people and assisting staff nurses in a Hospital environment
