Human Resource Internship – Hr Steel Center Student Employee- Spring 2024

The role of the HR STEEL Center Student Employee is to assist with benefits administration services, data entry of transactions, and inquiries/issues received from U. S. Steel’s employees and retirees. The role provides administrative support for customer inquiries/issues received by phone, including but not limited to, payroll, benefit eligibility, documentation requirements and validation, guidance with benefit and payroll related technologies (self-service), documentation of case details/history, etc.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Answering customer-initiated inbound phone calls, and other correspondence, from employees and retirees and interdepartmental personnel regarding various benefit payroll, and general HR matters.
  • Assist customers via phone with inquiries and establish rapport with the customer to best understand their needs.
  • Helping participants via phone to understand their benefits options and assist employees and retirees in making benefit elections.
  • Assist employees and plan participants via phone to navigate through the employee benefits and payroll self-service website and other related technologies; promote the usage of these technologies to customers.
  • Enter benefit elections on-line on behalf of employees and retirees, as needed.
  • Keep management (direct supervisor) advised of potential problem areas and recommend/implement solutions as appropriate. Escalate potential problems in a timely manner.
  • Escalate cases that are beyond level of knowledge to next tier or to supervisor; consistently follow escalation protocol when escalating a case.
  • Initiate case management for business processes.
  • Manage case load of outbound calls to inform participants of issue resolution.
  • Contact participants via phone as needed to relay time-sensitive information for benefit and payroll related matters.
  • Serve as first point of contact via phone for handling all retiree requests related to address changes, direct debit forms, power of attorney requests, pension verifications and banking related questions.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Pursuing a Bachelor’s degree or Master’s degree in Human Resources, Health Care Administration or related area of study
  • Area of interest in employee/retiree benefits and HR administration
  • GPA of a 3.0 or higher
  • Preferred prior experience in an office environment
  • A high-energy, self-motivated professional accustomed to moving at a fast pace in a progressive environment.
  • Dedicated and fast learner, committed to meeting deadlines.
  • Mandatory attendance for 3-week new hire "Boot Camp" during winter recess.
  • Must be available to work at least 16 hours/week between the hours of 8:00AM-5:00PM EST Monday-Friday (January through April).
  • Availability to continue internship with full time schedule (May through August) preferred.
