Information Technology Intern: Artificial Intelligence For Event Support Services

Duties and Responsibilities
The UNOG Division of Administration (DOA) of the United Nations Office at Geneva (UNOG) provides common administrative and support services to UNOG and to more than 30 UN entities in Geneva, Bonn, and Turin, and in more than 90 field offices worldwide at various levels. Located under the UNOG Division of Administration, Information and Communication Technology Service (ICTS) provides IT and communication-related services to UN Secretariat offices and programmes in Geneva, also performing the role of Regional Technology Centre for Europe. Services provided by ICTS include maintenance of the UNOG network and data centre with 400 servers and 7,000 workstations, management of some 7,000 fixed telephone connections, support provision to some 1,000 mobile phones, support to running of some 1,700 VTCs per year. ICTS also coordinates IT-related issues with other UN entities through the Geneva ICT Board and promotes the use of industry-standard processes, such as Security Standard ISO 27000 and Change Management Standard ISO 20000, to ensure security, stability and robustness of its services. This internship is in the Event Support Services (ESS) Team of the Information and Communication Technology Service (ICTS), Division of Administration (DOA), United Nations Office at Geneva (UNOG). The Intern reports to the Service Manager of the Event Support Services. Following the study on the use of non-staff capacities, one of our focus areas is to leverage the use of the latest developments in academia and the industry when it comes to cloud-based Artificial Intelligence tools being applied to Event Support Services. The intern will support the Event Support Services team with the introduction of cloud-based Artificial Intelligence tools relevant to Event Support. Tasks will include: Researching latest developments on Artificial Intelligence Cognitive Services tools already available for use at the United Nations Office at Geneva. Exploratory work on current event-related use cases for the application of cloud-based Artificial Intelligence tools. Creating prototypes and minimum viable products to showcase the explored use cases. Example: The Department of Operational Support (DOS) was established to provide end-to-end operational support, advisory services and other solutions to operating entities across the Secretariat, including departments, offices away from headquarters, peace operations, and regional commissions. The Human Resources Services Division (HRSD) provides dedicated services in support of human resources requirements of client entities, from process development through service delivery. The Non-Staff Capacities Unit (NSCU) provides support to managers and business partners in the use of non-staff personnel, helps clients to obtain the capacities necessary to deliver their mandates and also facilitates a better coordination with Member States on issues related to personnel contributed by their governments under the non-staff modality. Following the study on the use of non-staff capacities, one of our focus areas is to expand our global intern network, an online community of current interns with additional events, workshops and activities. This internship is located in the Non-Staff Capacities Unit (NSCU), the Human Resources Services Division (HRSD), Office of Support Operations (OSO), Department of Operational Support (DOS). The Intern reports to the Chief of the Unit. The intern will support the team in the administration and further development of the Global Intern Network on Microsoft Teams. Tasks will include: - adding and removing members from the team - answering questions about the global intern network - scheduling events and activities - creating content for posts on the network - researching and inviting guest speakers - researching workshop topics and supporting the design of workshops - proposing activities on the network - creating, implementing and analysing surveys and polls regarding interest areas of interns on the network
Qualifications/special skills
Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's degree or equivalent). Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. Applicants must have good knowledge of standard software applications, especially MS Word, MS PowerPoint, Outlook and MS Teams. Applicants must have good knowledge on consuming either Azure Cognitive Services or Amazon Web Services AI services. Applicants must have development skills, particularly to consume Azure Cognitive Services or Amazon Web Services AI services in any development environment (please specify).
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required.
