About the Team
The Mastercard Cyber and Intelligence Intern program is aimed at early career talent, to help you develop skills and gain cross-functional work experience. Over a period of 10 weeks, Intern participants will learn and develop skills, and gain valuable on the job experience to jumpstart their career.
The candidate who fills this role will join us in Cyber and Intelligence (C&I), which is one of Mastercard’s fastest growing business units and is responsible for developing technologies and solutions that provide safe, secure, and frictionless interactions for Mastercard’s customers and partners.
This team of data scientists comb Mastercard’s huge stores of data looking for meaningful and actionable insights related to cybersecurity and fraud. Using subject matter expertise and sophisticated modeling, we educate other teams and customers on best practices and innovate new tools to prevent bad actors from entering the network in the first place.
Internship Program
Mastercard’s summer internship program provides emerging talent with projects that will enhance skills as well as contribute to the department’s goals and objectives. In this program, you will participate in:
- Networking events, mentorship opportunities, and hear from senior leaders
- Volunteer and team building opportunities
- Formal performance assessments
- End-of-summer presentations to peers and Mastercard leadership
Role Description
As a Data Scientist Intern, you will:
- Conduct analyses on the effectiveness of product offerings by examining the real-world impacts of customer use. For instance, do banks that assess cyber risk before partnering with a merchant suffer less downstream fraud? How much money can a merchant save, in data breaches avoided, by subscribing to Mastercard’s cyber monitoring product?
- Gain subject matter knowledge on cybersecurity best practices and common types of fraud. Advise technical teams in accordance with subject matter knowledge and participate in educational initiatives.
- Competently handle large datasets, sifting for patterns and trends and translate those insights into technical solutions and education materials.
- Work closely with marketing and product to translate analysis into promotional materials.
- Partner with other teams (Safety Net, Smart Authentication, Data Strategy) to combine multiple sources of data in new and insightful ways.
Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in a bachelor’s degree program majoring in Computer Science or a related field with a graduation date of December 2024 or beyond
- Ideally focused in a field of data such as mathematics, statistics, or economics
- Insightful problem-solver, able to gather input from multiple divergent sources, narrow in on any problems or gaps, and propose effective solutions.
- Conversant with data: comfortable working with data sets of varying sizes, able to generate descriptive statistics and find simple patterns. Bonus: knowledge of and experience with machine learning models.
- Familiar with at least one of the following tools: Tableau, SQL, Python, AWS, Hadoop.
- Excellent communication skills, especially for group work and presentations to differing audiences.
