KMF Cryptographic Card Replacement

Investigate lower cost HSM options for the Tait Key Management Facility (KMF). An HSM (Hardware Security Module) generates high quality encryption keys and protects them from exposure. You will investigate HSM options and the feasibility of integrating them with the Tait KMF. The KMF software runs as a Service on Windows. It is a .NET Framework project written in C#.

The purpose of the KMF is to provide encryption keys for two-way radios used by emergency services. Encrypting the radio traffic prevents eavesdropping and the exposure of personal data.

The duties of the role will include:

  • Learning the relevant parts of the KMF source code
  • Learning the cryptographic library APIs
  • Working to integrate one or more HSMs with the KMF
  • Sharing the knowledge you've gained with the Applications Team

You have the opportunity to gain experience in:

  • Experience with C# .NET projects and Visual Studio

  • Fast learner and problem solver
  • Passionate
  • Familiarity with PKCS#11 is beneficial
  • Familiarity with C++ is beneficial

To be eligible for a summer internship, you must:

  • Have studied or be studying at a New Zealand tertiary education institute (note: students who have completed study overseas are not eligible).
  • Be studying at NZQA level 6-10, or if study has been completed, the closing date of the last semester must be less than 12 months ago.
  • Be studying science, technology, engineering, design or business.
  • Be legally permitted to work in New Zealand.
  • Not have been previously employed at our business unless part-time or temporary.
  • Not have undertaken more than two Experience Grant Internships with our Business.

This is a fixed term paid summer internship position for 400 hours, commencing in Monday 17th November 2025.
