The Department of History of Art, Architecture and Landscape is seeking a temporary lecturer in history of architecture and urbanism. The position is located in the Chair group of History and Theory of Architecture and Urbanism. We are seeking a colleague who is an engaged educator and has a command of a variety of architectural history topics. Our new colleague is interested in participating in and developing innovative learning formats, and has excellent social skills.

Who are you?
The candidate:
- Has in-depth knowledge of global architectural history, from the Middle Ages until the present time.
- Knows the professional vocabulary in the field of architectural history in English and is familiar with the ways architecture and urbanism are represented (different types of drawings, maps, etc.).
- Has some experience in teaching architectural history courses.
- Can work independently and collaboratively in an interdisciplinary and intercultural academic environment.
- PhD in the field of architectural and urban history, or you will defend your PhD in the next six months.
- Record of high-quality teaching appropriate to career stage.
- Excellent writing and speaking skills in English and preferably also in Dutch.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in an interdisciplinary and intercultural academic environment.
- Experience with administrative duties and/or departmental service and/or professional service is welcome.
What can you expect from us?
- In accordance with the collective labor agreement for Dutch universities, we offer a salary of at least € 3.546 up to a maximum of € 5.538 (schaal 10) gross per month for a full-time employment contract.
- 232 vacation hours per year, based on a 38-hour workweek (1.0 FTE). You can also work more or fewer hours in exchange for more or fewer free hours. For example, with a 40-hour workweek, you save 96 extra free hours, and with a 36-hour workweek, you lose 96 hours.
- End-of-year bonus of 8.3% and 8% holiday allowance.

- We are looking for a lecturer for a 0.5 FTE position for a period of one year.

The Department of History of Art, Architecture & Landscape (AAL) in Groningen is unique because, in the Bachelor program, it combines the study of the visual arts, urbanism, architectural history and the history of landscapes, and examines the relationships between artwork, city and landscape.
Specifically, the architectural and urban history section positions classical, object-based history and theory as the basis for addressing contemporary issues, notably in cultural heritage. Characteristic of the approach of the art history section is that it transcends the traditional lines of division between different periods and, while acknowledging the efficacy of chronological series in teaching, stresses the common features of works of art as material objects (with a special focus on their educational properties). Typical for the landscape section is the interaction between designed landscapes and country estates (gardens, parks, land art: phenomena closely linked to urban planning) and the geological and archaeological features of landscapes, and the way it integrates the representation of landscapes in artwork (notably paintings – here it connects to art history).
The MA History of Architecture and Urbanism at the University of Groningen examines the evolution of architecture, cities, landscapes, and cultural heritage within their broader social, cultural, political, and environmental contexts. Combining architectural and urban history, heritage studies, and healthy-city research, the program provides students with the analytical and research skills needed to understand the built environment and contribute to contemporary debates on urban development, heritage, and spatial transformation. The topics transcend the traditional geographical bias on Western Europe and the United States and include Central and Eastern Europe and the Global South. One of the program’s key themes is the interrelationship between ideology, propaganda, and architecture; another is the interplay between nature, ecology, and urbanism throughout the centuries.
