The Team

The Chief Information Officer Division (CIOD) delivers and supports a range of ICT services to the agency including infrastructure platforms, application solutions, and digital communications. CIOD is committed to building the agency’s information technology capability by providing resilient, modern, and secure systems informed by data and insights, and by upskilling teams to develop innovative new products and services.

The Platforms & Application Development (P&AD) Branch is the application development engine for the AEC, enabling federal and industrial elections through a range of applications. It supports the AEC with application development across variety of technology development platforms such as .Net, Java, Mainframe and some legacy systems.

The P&AD branch is divided into three sections: IT Roll and Event Applications, IT Applications Development and Application Platform Management.

The Opportunity

This role offers an exciting opportunity to further your career leading an established team that makes a significant contribution to the delivery of electoral events and day-to-day operations through an improved maturity of AEC’s systems.

The Mainframe team leader supports the Director within the IT Roll and Event Applications Section of the P&AD Branch. The role contributes to the day-to-day development, maintenance, enhancement and support of applications in the AEC’s ICT environment. This includes participating in section planning for short-term tasks and contributing to strategic planning for longer-term initiatives.

The Mainframe Team Leader manages a team of developers responsible for the development, maintenance, enhancement and support of applications within the IT Roll and Event Applications Section. This role is accountable for undertaking very complex and/or sensitive work, under broad direction, applying expertise across a range of activities relating to the design of software applications.

You will work under limited direction, utilising your expertise and knowledge to lead a software development team to meet the AEC’s needs. You will also work in partnership with business stakeholders and other technical teams, ensuring deadlines are consistently met and that a high standard of technical and design documentation is provided.

To excel you’ll have:

  • Sound knowledge and experience in successfully managing and delivering results within time restraints and competing priorities.
  • Proven ability to communicate with influence, negotiate outcomes and manage complex stakeholder relationships, including across a geographically dispersed network.
  • Strong conceptual and analytical abilities, with sound knowledge of change management practices and techniques to enable innovation.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and manage staff, while developing capability, encouraging career development, and embedding professionalism.
  • Demonstrated personal drive and integrity while achieving results within legislative and budget parameters.
  • Knowledge of, or ability to quickly gain, an understanding of the Commonwealth frameworks, including ICT frameworks.
  • Familiarity with software design and development concepts

Desirable

  • Demonstrated experience with, or exposure to, mainframe or related technologies, and the ability to apply this knowledge to support enterprise service delivery.

Additional responsibilities during an Electoral Event

  • Perform support functions outside of standard bandwidth hours as directed.
