Job Description:

About the role:

Advance your career by joining an engaged, elite Financial Reporting team delivering core financial disclosure documents to Senior Management, the Board of Directors, and ultimately to investors.

Reporting to the Director of Financial Reporting, the successful candidate is accountable for the delivery of Sun Life Financial Inc.'s (SLF) quarterly and annual public external financial statements. This role will also support digitalization efforts and process transformation through technology deployment.

Success requires effective collaboration with leaders and business partners at all levels, strong IFRS knowledge, and a passion for learning. The successful candidate should be a self-driven project manager with excellent analytical, problem-solving and communication skills, capable of challenging the status quo.

What will you do?

  • Coordinate the input to and draft the external financial statements (quarterly and annual) for SLF and certain subsidiaries/affiliated entities of SLF, including annual Sun Life Assurance (SLA) statements
  • Be the primary liaison with external auditors during quarterly reviews and the annual audit of the financial statements. Coordinate and lead meetings with key stakeholders and business partners, including senior executives
  • Collaborate with various key stakeholders and business partners across the organization to gather, validate and consolidated information supporting the notes to the financial statements and resolve issues as they arise
  • Partner with the Accounting Advisory team to understand accounting, reporting and disclosure impacts of transactions and changes in accounting standards. Assist with technical accounting research and disclosure requirements
  • Monitor and benchmark key trends, issues, and best practices for public disclosure across our peers in the financial services and insurance sector to continually enhance SLF’s disclosures
  • Ensure strong, SOX-compliant controls and processes are in place to support the Company disclosures
  • Leverage tools and technology to improve processes and lead process improvement projects
  • Lead and provide coaching to co-op and CPA students and offering mentorship and guidance for their professional development

What do you need to succeed?

  • CPA designation or equivalent with at least 2 years of experience post-qualification
  • Collaborative working style with strong interpersonal, influencing, and stakeholder engagement skills to partner with employees/leaders at all levels in the organization
  • Excellent written, verbal communication and presentation skills
  • Highly motivated and a self-starter with a keen interest in continual learning and career development
  • Strong technical, analytical, research, and problem-solving skills and attention to detail
  • Strong understanding of IFRS accounting principles, life insurance accounting, and the complex regulatory environment
  • Ability to influence without authority

Preferred Skills:

  • 1 to 2 years of experience drafting external financial statements
  • Experience with Longview and/or Workiva is an asset

The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted. It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors. In addition to Base Pay, eligible Sun Life employees participate in various incentive plans, payment under which is discretionary and subject to individual and company performance. Certain sales focused roles have sales incentive plans based on individual or group sales results.
