The Medical Assistant Scribe position at Marin Community Clinics (MCC) is an integral part of MCC’s team care model. This duo role will involve working as a Medical Assistant and as a Medical Scribe.
Medical Assistant Responsibilities:
- Escorts patients to the exam room, interviews patients, measures vital signs, such as pulse rate, temperature, blood pressure, weight and height, and records information on patients’ charts.
- Prepares treatment rooms for examination of patients.
- Cleans and sterilizes instruments.
- Inventories and orders medical supplies and materials.
- Operates electrocardiograph (EKG), and other equipment to administer routine diagnostic tests or calls medical facility or department to schedule patients for tests.
- Gives injections or treatments and performs routine laboratory tests.
- Keys data into computer to maintain office and patient records.
- Cleans and disinfects operatory in accordance with department’s policy and OSHA guidelines.
- Sterilizes and disinfects instruments in accordance with department policy and OSHA guidelines.
- Follows policies and procedures including universal precautions as defined by OSHA’s guidelines on Bloodborne Pathogens and Hazardous Materials standards.
- Practices good people skills to maintain good public relations with patients and with fellow co-workers.
- Maintains patient confidentiality in accordance with department policy and HIPPA guidelines.
- Attends and participates in required meetings, training, and educational programs.
- Performs administrative responsibilities including checking eligibility, verifying demographics, assisting patients with filling out necessary paperwork, and making up follow-up appointments.
- Perform other work as assigned.
Medical Scribe Responsibilities:
- The primary role of the scribe is to assist the provider with documentation of each patient's clearly recording each patient's symptoms, history, physical exam, and documenting the diagnosis as well as treatment plans in the medical record during a clinic visit.
- At the start of the visits scribes clearly identifies that they are documenting as scribes in the electronic health record (EHR).
- Accompanies the clinician into the patient examination area, or joins the appointment remotely by telephone, to transcribe a history and physical examination as given by the patient and provider.
- Under the direction of the provider, transcribes and places patient orders, including laboratory tests, radiology tests, referrals, etc.
- Documents any procedures performed by the provider or nurses in the EHR.
- Transcribes any consultation or discussions with family and/or the provider.
- Completes the patient's chart by transcribing results of any labs, x-rays, or other evaluations. In doing so, the scribe continuously checks on the progress of this data in order to get the patient's workup complete so that the provider is able to make his/her decisions regarding that patient.
- Scribe lists all proper diagnoses as well as any follow up instructions and prescriptions, as dictated by the provider.
- Scribe does not directly assist with patient care. The scribe documents orders generated by the provider.
- Scribe assists the provider and support staff with paperwork, telephone calls, faxing, and chart abstraction and may facilitate communication among the care team.

Scribe can process MyChart communications and either task to appropriate member of the care team or get information from the provider to respond to the patient in a timely way.
- Follow compliance protocol on list of prohibited task when scribing.
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Certification from an accredited Medical Assistant educational program.
- Current CPR/BLS certification from an accredited organization.
- Completion of an externship program prior to graduation of Medical Assistant program desired.
- A minimum of 0-6 months of Medical Assistant work experience post graduating from Medical Assistant program preferred.
- Prior experience working with under-served communities in a community health clinic environment highly desirable.
Required Skills and Abilities:
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Ability to always communicate clearly and effectively with patients and others in a courteous and friendly manner.
- Strong written and verbal English skills.
- Bilingual (Spanish/English) language skill is required.
- Knowledge of patient care and examination procedures.
- Understanding of medical practices, administrative process and organizational polices.
- Demonstrated computer skills and experience with MS Office.
- Ability to multitask in a fast-paced community clinic environment.
- Strong time management skills and attention to detail.
- Prior experience using Electronic HealthCare Records (EPIC, OCHIN, NextGen) a plus.
- Ability to work in a team environment setting.
- Flexibility / availability in schedules and shifts a plus.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
- Prolonged standing, walking, and prolonged periods sitting at desk and working on a computer.
- Must be able to lift to 25 pounds at times and move medical equipment.
- Fine motor hand movements typical of performing standard medical procedures.
- Able to read charts graphs and readings on medical equipment.
- While most work performed in clinic, may occasionally work outdoors and in inclement weather.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
- Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds at times.
- Prolonged standing, walking, and prolonged periods sitting at desk and working on a computer.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
