Division
The Division of Molecular Metabolism aims to understand the regulation of mitochondrial function and the role of mitochondrial dysfunction in disease and aging. Using animal models and patient material, our goal is to gain insights into disease pathophysiology and develop novel treatments. We are currently looking for a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to join the research led by Dr. Roberta Filograna.
Our research focuses on investigating how mitochondrial dysfunction drives both cell-autonomous and non-cell-autonomous mechanisms of neurodegeneration. We employ a multidisciplinary approach, integrating experimental models (in vitro, ex vivo, and in vivo), genetic and pharmacological manipulations, omics technologies (transcriptomics and proteomics), and advanced imaging techniques.

Your Mission
The primary objective of this postdoctoral position is to study the role of mitochondrial dysfunction in Parkinson’s Disease (PD). PD is a common neurodegenerative disorder caused by the loss of dopamine-producing neurons in the Substantia nigra. Our research aims to unravel how mitochondrial fitness is involved in PD pathophysiology and the maintenance of dopamine neurons using biochemical and molecular analyses, cutting-edge technologies, and genetically modified mouse models.
Your Profile
We invite applications from enthusiastic and motivated individuals with a PhD in molecular biology or genetics. Experience in mitochondrial biology, neuroscience, molecular biology, and mouse genetics is advantageous. Candidates with a background in bioinformatics are also of interest. Good documentation skills and proficiency in both spoken and written English are required. The successful candidate should be able and willing to work in a team. Personal suitability is of great importance in the evaluation process.
What We Offer
A creative and inspiring environment full of expertise and curiosity. Karolinska Institutet is one of the world's leading medical universities. Our vision is to pursue the development of knowledge about life and promote better health for all. At Karolinska Institutet, we conduct successful medical research and hold the largest range of medical education in Sweden. The Division of Molecular Metabolism is located at the modern Biomedicum laboratory at Solna campus. Our research encompasses biochemical and genetic studies of patients with diseases and basic scientific approaches to understand mitochondrial metabolism regulation. We offer an outstanding research environment and close interaction between basic and clinical science at the Centre for Inherited Metabolic Diseases (CMMS) at Karolinska University Hospital, Stockholm. Excellent access to advanced resources in molecular and cell biology is available at the department and national core facilities at the Science for Life Laboratory.
Entry requirements
Postdoctoral scholarships may be established for foreign researchers who pursue their merit in Sweden. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent.
A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent.
To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) start date of the post doctoral education.
The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.
Location: Solna
Type of scholarship
The amount is tax free and it is set for twelve months at a time, paid out on a six months basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be acceptable.
Application process
An application must contain the following documents in English or Swedish:
- A complete résumé, including the date of the thesis defense, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, current position, and academic distinctions (max 2 pages)
- A complete list of publications
- A personal motivation letter explaining your research interest (max 1 page)
- Contact information of at least two references
The application is to be submitted on the Varbi recruitment system.
