Practice Assistant – Tax
Provide high‑level support to two Partners in our highly-regarded Melbourne Tax team
A role for an experienced Practice Assistant who values trust, accountability and being closely embedded in the team
Play a central role in the smooth day‑to‑day running of a high‑performing practice, with real involvement in clients, matters and people
About the Role
We are seeking an experienced and highly capable Practice Assistant to support Partners Michael Clough and Kai-Chen Lamb within our Melbourne Tax practice on a full-time permanent basis.
This role suits a career Practice Assistant who enjoys being deeply involved in their practice and takes pride in being a trusted, steady presence in a busy environment. You will work closely with the Partners and the wider team, helping manage the operational rhythm of the practice while supporting clients, matters and people with professionalism, discretion and care.
This is a role for someone who wants to go beyond task‑based support and instead play a meaningful part in how a practice is run, how work flows, and how the team performs day to day.
The key responsibilities for this role include but are not limited to the following:
Take ownership of the administrative and operational coordination of the practice, ensuring work continues to move efficiently in a high‑volume environment
Manage diaries, inboxes and communications with judgment and care, actively prioritising and escalating matters where appropriate
Track key deadlines, meetings and commitments, across matters and engagements
Support the financial and commercial management of the practice, including billing processes, expenses and regular WIP reporting
Maintain accurate matter and client records, including file openings and closures, conflicts checks, archiving and document management
Support the wider team by staying across what’s happening in the practice and taking a proactive, people‑focused approach
Act as a reliable point of coordination who helps bring structure, calm and consistency when priorities shift or pressure increases
About You
To succeed in this role, you will bring:
Significant experience in a legal support role, ideally supporting a Partner in a fast-paced team
Strong practice management capability, including billing and WIP discipline, confidence using legal systems and processes (Elite 3E experience is highly regarded), and the ability to keep track of client-specific arrangements and matter requirements
Exceptional organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple competing priorities across clients, matters and stakeholders
Strong judgment, initiative and a genuine interest in understanding the clients, matters and commercial context behind the work
The confidence and maturity to coordinate others, drive follow-through and keep work moving without formal authority
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build trusted relationships at all levels
A calm, resilient and unflappable approach, with strong attention to detail and sound judgment under pressure
A caring, compassionate and grounded approach, with a genuine interest in looking after the team, contributing to culture and helping others perform at a high standard
