NOTE: The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) has issued new requirements for health care and congregant care facilities to decrease the risk of COVID-19 outbreaks. Based on the CDPH public health mandate, all candidates for positions at Edgewood Center must provide proof of vaccination. Edgewood Center will consider applicants with ADA and Title VII exemptions on a case-by-case basis.

Practicum- Kinship Support Network-SPRING 2025

Program Description
The Kinship Support Network (KSN) provides support services for relatives who are raising a relatives' children (i.e. grandparents raising grandchildren). KSN provides a range of support services to help ensure that youth who are not able to live with their parents can stay with family and in their community as opposed to going into the traditional foster care system. The goal of the program is to support kinship families in developing and maintaining a healthy home environment and help them strengthen their self-sufficiency and self-efficacy skills through therapeutic supports and educational workshops.

Position Summary
Provides community-based individual, group and family mental health treatment to Kinship caregivers and family members. This is a 20-hour a week position.
Learn To:
  • Develop effective communication skills with primary age group served and involved family members
  • Assess clients' strengths and needs and identify dynamics, diagnostic elements and provide therapy to clients.
  • Identify when families are in crisis and identifies safety plan to assist client through crisis as clinically appropriate.
  • Maintain professional boundaries and presentation as well as confidentiality.
  • Effectively communicate client/family issues with team members on care team.
  • Document requirements and standards consistent with best practices
  • Complete assessments, progress notes and treatment plans within specified time line; includes all elements required for the client's file.
  • Work with culturally diverse employees and clients

  • One to two hours of clinical supervision with licensed professional per week
  • Two hours of group supervision with other agency clinicians and licensed clinical supervisor

Essential Functions
  • Conduct mental health assessments and providing individual and group therapy to the caregiver adults as well as family if deemed necessary.
  • Offer the caregiver another support in maintaining his/her family arrangement. There may also be some youth that may qualify to receive therapy services from the trainee.
  • Maintain confidential mental health records for each caregiver on caseload
  • Develop and implements short term client/family treatment model.
  • Provide urgent and emergent assessment, intervention, consultation and support as needed to Kinship families.
Applied Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Currently enrolled in a master's level graduate program in marriage and family therapy, clinical counseling or social work
  • 2-3 years relevant experience
  • Must apply for, or possess, a National Provider Identification (NPI) Number within one week of date of practicum.
  • Experience working with minority, adult/geriatric and pediatric populations preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability in working collaboratively with interdisciplinary teams.
  • Valid California driver's license
