Position Description
The Research Finance Manager and the Research Finance team are dedicated to ensuring the financial health and integrity of RSJH, measurement of performance and financial reporting. The Research Finance Manager will provide strategic and operational leadership in the development, implementation, and management of financial, accounting, and reporting policies, processes, and operational activities. As a key member of the RSJH leadership team, the Research Finance Manager will work with the COO and CFO to develop and execute upon the financial strategy for RSJH, as well as overseeing institutional financial matters, such as audits and investment income and ensuring the integration and effective use of the research management system. The Research Finance Manager manages the day-to-day operations of and management of the Research Finance team within RSJH, ensuring the provision of effective and efficient service to the institution, principal investigators, researchers, learners, research staff and external partners. The Research Finance team is the primary financial contact for RSJH researchers in the management of their research funds and is responsible for:
- All external and internal financial administration and reporting to ensure that the accounting and financial reporting requirements of research sponsors and RSJH are met.
- Ensuring that all research expenses are compliant with research sponsor guidelines and contracts, as well as RSJH policies and procedures.
- Provide training, support, and advice to researchers and their administrative support on research sponsor and RSJH requirements as they pertain to research funds, as well as good financial management practises.
- Collaborate with St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton (SJHH) to facilitate accounts payable and receivable, payroll, and vendor setup and payment.
The Research Finance Manager is accountable for the development and delivery of appropriate policies, procedures, management controls, and services to ensure the effective management, audit, accounting, control, and reporting of RSJH research funds. The Research Finance Manager is the lead contact for the team with external partners, researchers, staff and offices across SJHH and RSJH to ensure that finance operations and reporting are efficient and effective.
- Master’s degree in accounting, finance or another related field required
- Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) and/or equivalent work experience required
- Demonstrated knowledge of complex financial analysis and accounting principles, processes, and guidelines required
- Expert knowledge of research finance functions required
- Minimum ten years of experience in progressively more responsible positions in Finance, with in-depth knowledge of Financial Planning and Analysis and research funding concepts
- Experience in managing the overall financial administration and reporting for an academic research organization, including ensuring adherence to individual sponsor and RSJH/SJHH requirements and sponsor reporting requirements.
- Experience in providing advice, support and facilitation with regard to financial management, including funding methodologies/mechanisms, performance, compliance and reporting.
- Experience managing staff and creating an inclusive environment where employees can thrive.
- Advanced knowledge of accounting policies and guidelines.
- Advanced knowledge of budgeting concepts, forecasting, and scenario planning.
- Demonstrated ability/knowledge in performing complex financial analysis. Able to simplify complex information and convert it into operational plans.
- Ability to exercise independent judgement and be proactive.
- Exceptional interpersonal skills to interact with all levels of the organization.
- Demonstrated ability to build, foster and maintain constructive relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
- Strong ability to function independently and as a member of a team dealing with multiple priorities in a complex environment.
- Possess a high level of diplomacy and relationship building skills necessary to establish effective working relationship.
- Excellent proficiency with both oral & written communication. Excellent presentation skills and ability to synthesize data at all levels of the organization.
- Exceptional facilitation, problem solving and negotiation skills.
- Strong judgment, analytical and reasoning skills. Ability to understand complex financial data. Highly developed conceptual and critical thinking abilities.
- Ability to maintain discretion when handling confidential matters.
- Previous experience working in an academic research finance environment an asset.
- Able to manage workload and complete work assignments within given timelines.
