Research Intern – Biotechnology

We are seeking a Research Intern to lead and manage biotechnology research projects, including developing protocols, obtaining approvals, and designing advanced experiments. The role involves coordinating with the research team to ensure smooth sample collection, data processing, and analysis, as well as managing experimental supplies, lab equipment maintenance, and project budgets. Additionally, the candidate will conduct advanced statistical analysis, prepare reagents, support core team members, organize meetings, present findings, and ensure comprehensive project documentation.
This position is covered by the Terms and Conditions of the OPSEU Unit 677 Collective Agreement (Unit 2). A copy is available on the NOSM University website.
Responsibilities
Tasks may include but are not limited to the following:
- Develop and obtain research approvals for biotechnology research projects
- Design and implement advanced biotechnology experiments as outlined by the research team
- Provide overall management to the experimental aspects of the project. This includes coordination with research team to ensure sample collection, data processing and data analysis
- Manage experimental supplies
- Maintain lab equipment and regular instrument calibrations
- Prepare reagents, complete biotechnology experiments, and support the experimental work of the core team members
- Organize meetings, present experimental findings, and prepare reports as directed by the research team
- Conduct advanced statistical analysis of research data
- Ensure project document management.
Qualifications
Education
- A University degree in a relevant discipline from a recognized university with Canadian accreditation or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
- University or college graduate who has graduated within the last three years from an accredited college or university. The candidate must be a graduate of a post-secondary degree or diploma program. The position will be a first full-time employment in the candidate’s field of study.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Related experience is considered an asset, but not a requirement
- Demonstrated writing proficiency (i.e. reports, research publications, policies);
- Demonstrated problem-solving and analytical skills;
- Work effectively under time pressures;
- Work effectively in a team environment;
- Work within established organizational practices, protocols, and policies;
Language
- Must be able to communicate effectively in English (verbally, written and comprehension)
- French/Indigenous language skills would be considered asset
Candidate Criteria
- Candidates must be a new entrant into the workforce, are transitioning to a new career, or the unemployed or underemployed who are entering a new field.
- Candidates must have not previously participated in an NOHFC funded internship.
- Candidates must be 18 years of age or older.
- Candidates must be legally eligible to work in Canada.
- Must reside or be willing to relocate to Northern Ontario
