The Software Engineering Manager leads strategic engineering initiatives that power Western Union’s digital and platform evolution. This role combines technical leadership, team development, and cross‑regional collaboration to deliver robust, scalable systems that support our global financial network and elevate the customer experience.
Role Responsibilities
Oversee the full software development lifecycle, ensuring projects are delivered on time, within scope, and at the highest quality standards
Demand Prioritization, acting as the bridge between Product/Business units and technical areas, managing expectations and negotiating trade-offs between new features, technical debts, business as usual demands, and others.
Align the technology roadmap with corporate business goals and needs. Translate business requirements into actionable technical strategies
Provide to the technical team a high level guidance and directions on system design, ensuring the adoption of robust design patterns and alignment with the corporate architecture and cybersec standards and policies.
Technical team leadership and talent development. Manage and mentor a multidisciplinary team of developers, business analists, project managers and quality assurance analistis. Conduct regular 1:1s, define KPIs, lead performance reviews, help them navigate challenges, and coach them for their career development
Own the incident management process. Lead the team through critical production issues and ensuring rapid resolution with minimal business impact.
Lead war rooms, manage production crisis, and conduct constructive post-mortems to avoid reincidences
Demonstrate strong capabilities in assessing business needs while providing creative and effective solutions in conformance to emerging technology standards
Interface and collaborate with other engineers in geographically distributed development centers
Apply Agile methodology daily and follow Definition of Done (DoD) process for better quality
Estimate engineering effort, plan implementation, and roll out applications with cross-functional impacts
Role Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related fields, with more than 8 years of professional experience, including at least 2 years in a management position
High expecience with system development methodologies and test methodologies
High expecience with incident and problem management
Proven ability to understand the business and ability to contribute to technology direction that drives measurable business improvements
Excellent decision-making, communication, and collaboration skills
Excellent understanding of computer science fundamentals, data structures, algorithms, OOPs, and OOA/D
Demonstrated experience in modern programming languages and technologies (for example, .Net, React) and design patterns
Demonstrated capabilities in assessing business needs while providing creative and effective solutions in conformance to emerging technology standards
Team player with strong analytical, verbal, and written communication skills
Ability to work in a fast paced, iterative development environment and adapt to changing business priorities and to thrive under pressure
Experience with unit testing and mocking frameworks
Nice to have
Past experience on the Financial industry and banking
Past experience with Brazilian bank regulatory environment
Experience in creating and consuming RESTful and SOAP based web services
Hands-on experience in .Net, React, Java/J2EE, XML, Web technologies, Web Services
Experience with agile development methodologies with Test Driven Development (TDD) and CI (Continuous Integration)/CD (Continuous Delivery)
Hands-on experience in building high performance and large-scale real-time systems that scale to high volumes of transactions per day
