Te Pokapū Aurorotanga/Centre for Early Learning in Medicine (CELM) at Otago Medical School are recruiting for 2025 Teaching Fellow/Professional Practice Fellows in our Early Learning in Medicine (ELM) programme, based in Dunedin.

About our team/ Mō te tīma

Staff in the CELM, along with staff in the Dunedin School of Medicine (DSM) and School of Biomedical Sciences (BMS), are responsible for teaching in years 2 & 3 of the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MB ChB) Programme.

ELM consists of a series of modules that utilise lecture, laboratory, tutorial, healthcare and community-based learning opportunities, covering a curriculum framework based on holistic models of care (Te Whare Tapa Whā; Fonofale; biopsychosocial).

Included are three modules co-ordinated out of CELM taught mainly in small group tutorial sessions (11-13 students):

Clinical Skills: delivers instruction in history taking, physical examination and clinical reasoning skills. Peer examination, simulated patients (actors) and volunteer patients from the community, provide opportunities for practice of clinical skills, with instruction and facilitation by medically qualified tutors.

Early Professional Experience (EPE): provides students with a wide range of opportunities to work with patients and other health professionals. These learning experiences are supported by tutorial-based discussions (facilitated by qualified health professionals), and collectively these introduce students to various social, clinical and professional issues, which help students bridge the gap between the theory and practice of clinical medicine.

Integrated Cases: is based on a series of clinical cases and scenarios, each of which extends over two weeks and enables learning from other ELM modules to be extended and integrated around a clinical problem. The learning is active and task based, with facilitation by tutors who may or may not have a medical qualification.
