About us

We believe that people do extraordinary things when they’re given the freedom to grow – and that belief drives everything we do at Optimax Energy.

For over a decade, we’ve been building smart, automated trading systems that are helping shape the future of green energy across Europe. We’re a team of around 60 international professionals based in Leipzig, Germany – and now we’re looking for teammates in New Zealand.

Why New Zealand?
We want our traders to enjoy their work and their lives. By adding a team in your time zone, we’re eliminating the need for night shifts – so you get to trade European electricity markets during normal daytime hours from the comfort of your own home.

We’re a culturally diverse group united by a shared mission: accelerating the energy transition through technology and smart trading. We genuinely care about work-life balance, creative freedom, and giving our people room to grow. Different perspectives make us stronger, and we actively foster an inclusive environment where everyone’s contribution is valued.

If you’re excited by the idea of combining technology with energy markets – and doing it from Aotearoa – we’d love to hear from you.

Your responsibilities

As a Trading Systems Operator, you’ll be at the heart of our trading floor – just without the floor. Working remotely from New Zealand, you’ll take full ownership of your day shifts and play a key role in keeping our automated systems running smoothly. Here’s what a typical day might look like:

  • Take full responsibility for your trading operator shift – day shifts only, no night work

  • Monitor and fine-tune our automated trading systems to keep them performing at their best

  • Actively trade on European intraday electricity markets

  • Manage electricity schedule processes and ensure everything runs on time

  • Spot inefficiencies and optimise our trading workflows

  • Oversee a diverse product portfolio including consumption and cross-border trading

  • Be the go-to person for business partners when critical incidents need handling

  • Work closely with our analysis team to help improve and evolve our automated trading agents

  • Enjoy a professional onboarding – in Germany (all costs covered)

Your skills

The Essentials

We’re looking for someone who’s sharp, curious, and ready to take ownership. You don’t need to be an energy trading veteran – but you do need to bring the right mindset:

  • A relevant degree – think business, economics, engineering, mathematics, energy management, or similar

  • A solid foundation in statistics and working with data

  • Real interest in energy markets, the energy transition, or trading

  • Strong decision-making skills and a genuine sense of responsibility for your work

  • A passion for problem-solving – even in situations where you are missing information

  • A love of learning, sharing knowledge and introducing new ideas

  • Sharp troubleshooting and analytical thinking – you enjoy getting to the bottom of things

  • Excellent documentation skills – you know the value of clear, well-written records

  • Willingness to work day shifts on a rotating roster, including weekends and public holidays (with bonuses to match)

Bonus Points:

These aren’t required, but if any of these sound like you, that’s a great sign:

  • Previous experience in the energy industry

  • Knowledge of liberalized energy markets, pricing mechanisms, trading strategies, or renewables

  • Programming skills (e.g. Python or R) – a handy bonus for working with our systems and data

What we offer

Flexible working arrangements and benefits:

  • Fully remote work – as long as you can use the required setup, you’re good to go!

  • Market-based salary, KiwiSaver in addition to salary

  • 30 days paid vacation

  • Additional vacation for the honeymoon

  • Day shifts only – we set up the NZ team specifically, so nobody has to trade through the night

  • Weekend and public holiday bonuses

  • Home office equipment

Team culture and working atmosphere:

  • Work in a mission-oriented, international team that values diversity and equality

  • Working atmosphere with short communication paths and flat hierarchies

  • Work with cutting-edge automated trading technology and machine learning systems

  • A culture that values your ideas, your wellbeing, and your growth

  • Annual team events in Germany (all costs covered)

Professional development and further training:

  • Independence and responsibility in project management

  • 10% of weekly working time for personal and professional development
